WordPress Implements Identicons

Ballantyne's WordPress IdenticonIf I were to comment on my own blog, but I did not log on, or otherwise have an avatar, there would be no visual to identify me. In the past, WordPress would show a silhouette of a generic person. A new site feature is the creation of an image, called an identicon, that is unique because it is based on the IP address of the poster. The feature has been implemented on this blog, and you are seeing my identicon.

My Identicon at the site of Don ParkTo complete my research on the subject, I dropped by the blog of the author of the identicon, Don Parks. Over there my identicon was simpler. I don’t know why.

Please stop using PDF files at web sites

This is a rant asking web designers to stop using PDF files on web sites. The subject doesn’t really belong on this blog, so I will hide it in the next pane.

Using AllYouCanUpload

Lately all of my online pictures are being stored at AllYouCanUpload. I have no complaints about the access, the price, or the speed of delivery. I recommend it (certainly over Flickr). It is free, there is no limit to the size of the images, and they promise that they will be available forever.

The next pane shows how it works. It is also a plea for someone to create an uploader. Click on the title if you cannot see the next pane. Wait for the large image to load. Commentary at the end.

It has been a while since I’ve posted anything that is just about blogging, eh?

Is AllYouCanUpload.com the answer to storing pictures online?

Many of the images you see here are stored on Flickr. For a number of reasons, Flickr has disappointed me this season. So this week I was trolling the Internet looking for a better place to stash images. I am wondering if AllYouCanUpload.com is it.

The links in the sidebar of this blog have been reorganized

WordPress.com provides for a Blogroll in the sidebar. This is supposed to be a list of links to other blogs recommended by the author of this blog. I had been putting all of my recommended links there. Links that are not to blogs have now been shifted to new sidebar lists called, Interesting Links, and RSS Feed. Some of the technical reasons are discussed in the next pane.

Blogging seems to be a form of Internet viral networking

I believe that networking is more powerful than most people know, and this relatively new community of bloggers may allow thoughtful and articulate people reach a global audience — as well as discover and join a circle of like-minded people. While huge numbers of people do this as a hobby, there are many who see professional reasons to blog.

Since this blog is still an exploration, consider this article an interim field report. There are excellent references (links) included. (Click Continue for the rest of this report.)
