The wise and experienced gentlemen who frequent this hill spoke of a steep hidden skiable slope off to the east of the tourist route below the summit. I looked at the area on Google Earth, which showed the slope with summer foliage; but that was enough to let me guess where we should explore.

We found it! I took this panorama because I want to remember the spot. Just below here it is necessary to head around to the skiers’ right, and back to the public path on the ridge — or face an ugly climb back up.

This is not exactly an open slope. It is better. It has nicely spaced clumps of trees with lovely, fairly steep, glades of snow.

If you open the large image you will see that the route heads directly down towards Lake Capilano (Vancouver’s drinking water). Scroll to the right and you can see the open cut of the public trail.

It would be hard to become lost on a day like today; but learning to recognize these features would help if the clouds rolled in.
