The Ridge above Bowen Bay – Dawn

Bowen Bay Ridge - Dawn

Bowen Bay Ridge – Dawn,
originally uploaded by Robert Ballantyne.

This summer I would like to regain some of the fitness that I lost last year after an operation. We enjoyed skiing this winter and spring. And for the past couple of weeks Bruce and I have been hiking up Mt. Gardner on Bowen Island early in the morning twice during the week. We leave Miller’s Landing at 6 AM, and drive to the top of Bowen Bay Hill. The trail follows the SW ridge to the summit. This is about exercise, so we go for a little over an hour and head down. It is amazing how quickly I feel my strength returning, and how good I feel for the rest of the day.

This morning as we left, the sky was coloured with the pre-dawn and the 3rd quarter Moon was astonishingly high overhead. Just over 1,000′ above Bowen Bay Road, the trail winds east over the gentle ridge, and suddenly the sun was winking in our eyes.
