Salish Sea Salmon = Federal Fish

Yesterday Justice Christopher Hinkson of the B.C. Supreme Court ruled, “fish which are reared in fin-fish farms on the coast of British Columbia are either a part of the overall British Columbia Fishery or are a fishery unto themselves. In either case they fall under the jurisdiction of Parliament.” This means the parliament of Canada, and not the British Columbia legislature, is now responsible for fish farms.

The decision is suspended for 12 months to allow the senior governments to sort out the transfer of power.

Some members of the environmental community see that this decision will result changes to the practice of fish farming such that the wild stocks of salmon are protected.
