Explore Bowen Island National Park Map

Bowen Island volunteers have produced an excellent map of Bowen Island showing the lands that might be candidates for inclusion in the proposed National Park. Click the image below to explore the map interactively as an overlay on Google Earth. You will not need Google Earth, but you will need a compatible web browser.

After you follow the link, read the instructions under the interactive map.

I am extremely concerned that trails running across private property are marked on this map.

This is a blatant violation of privacy.

If this is the way Bowen Island is being “explored” for a National Park, it certainly DOES NOT have my vote.

    Hi Janet,

Thanks for your comment. I’ve found the map useful (for me), mainly because as people are talking about features of Bowen that may be affected by the Park I can find on the map what is being discussed. I have not been able to find trails marked that cross private property. Also (and lately I’ve been out of the loop – so it is possible something has changed) I recall hearing that Parks Canada has been clear that they have no funds (or appetite) for acquiring private land. I don’t believe that this map is a proposal; it was created to reveal what might be issues and where they are. It is a document created by islanders and is not from Parks Canada. Could you be specific about which trails run across what private property? Thanks.

BTW, Janet, and anyone else who has opinions to contribute to the discussion of a National Park on Bowen Island:

While you are welcome to comment here, I am concerned that your discussion will not receive all the attention that it deserves. Most people who are really interested in the details of that map have already downloaded the KMZ file (link provided in my article above) so that they can explore the map in Google Earth instead of the relatively small window I provide in a web browser. Having acquired the map for themselves, they are probably not likely to come back here and see any ongoing discussion. (My only contribution to the map was to figure out how to overlay it in Google Earth and to provide it in 2 forms: a kmz file you can download, or a link to a version in a web page.)

So, I am suggesting that the best place to post comments and to encourage discussion is at BIO – Bowen Island Ourselves. Of course, as a blogger, I am delighted when people comment here.
