Love cold rain

On Saturday night, as I lay in bed, I could hear the cold rain splashing down outside. When it is below 8ºC near sea level, it means that it is likely snowing above 1000 meters. For some of us, this is good news.

On Sunday, I was planning a brief ski on nearby Hollyburn Mountain.

As I was leaving Bowen Island on the ferry, suddenly a hole in the cloud appeared, and the sun shone.

We discovered that since we were last up to Cypress Provincial Park an enormous amount of fresh snow has fallen, including several inches overnight.

It was lovely on the upper part of Hollyburn Mountain (above the commercial cross country tenure). Although I am told there is now about 5-1/2 meters of snow on the hill, it is considered late in the season, and the Park staff has removed the wands to the summit (so go, only if you know the way).

As we skied up to the bottom of the clouds we could see squalls of precipitation moving across the City of Vancouver.

At the top we were in cloud, and there was even a moment when it was snowing. But, as soon as we started to ski down we found some sun.

Although there were very few people on the upper part of the hill, we left the trail and came down through the beautiful glades so that we could make some fresh tracks.
